Atomic design works with levels :
Atoms: These serve as the elemental building blocks, encompassing elements such as buttons, input fields, and icons.
Molecules: Molecules combine atoms to give rise to more intricate components, like input fields paired with labels or navigation menus.
Organisms: Organisms are composite components formed by molecules and atoms, encompassing entities like product cards or navigation bars.
Templates: Templates lay down the overarching layout structure for a page, orchestrating organisms in a specific configuration like BlogPostTemplate.
Pages: Pages are the tangible web pages brought to life by combining templates like BlogPostPage.
In atomic design, there's a rule where each design element can only use the ones below it. For example, templates can include organisms and atoms, but they shouldn't include pages, because that would go against the way atomic design is supposed to work.
What makes a good design system?
Now that we've explored the theory of Atomic Design, it's time to put it into action. Let's equip you with the practical approach needed to make an efficient design system step by step :
Component Inventory: Kickstart by meticulously cataloging and documenting all the atoms, molecules, and organisms used in your project. This inventory forms the bedrock of your design system.
Standardized Naming Conventions: Forge clear and consistent naming conventions for your components. These conventions are the guardians of order, ensuring seamless collaboration between designers and developers.
Design Guidelines: Develop comprehensive design guidelines that encompass typography, color schemes, spacing, and other critical design elements. Adherence to these guidelines guarantees a cohesive visual identity.
Component Libraries: Construct dedicated component libraries that house your design system components. These libraries should comprise design assets and code snippets for developers' ease of use.
Collaboration with Developers: Engage developers from the inception of the design process. Their insights can shape design decisions that are not only aesthetically pleasing but also technically feasible.
Accessibility Focus: Elevate accessibility in your design system. Collaborate closely with developers to ensure components are designed and coded with accessibility in mind, benefiting all users.
Effective Collaboration with Designers
Effective collaboration with designers is pivotal to the success of your Atomic Design-based design system, be sure to respect the following points to ensure a smooth collaboration :
Processes: Maintain transparent and open communication channels with designers. Regular meetings and discussions are essential to ensure alignment and shared understanding.
Streamlined Design Handoff: Leverage design handoff tools such as Zeplin or Figma's developer handoff features. These tools simplify the transfer of design assets and specifications to developers.
Thorough Documentation: Comprehensively document your design system, including design rationales, usage guidelines, and code examples. This documentation serves as a valuable resource for both designers and developers.
Cultivate Empathy and Respect: Foster a culture of mutual respect between designers and developers, recognizing the integral roles both play in achieving the project's success.
My experience at Free
My experience at Free (a French telecommunications company) was highly intriguing. When I joined, there was already an ongoing Design System project, but there was no organized structure, team, or defined processes in place. One or two individuals occasionally worked on it in between other feature developments.
While the need for a Design System was evident, we didn't require a dedicated team. Observing the designers' commitment to the project, alongside the realization that the development aspect was lagging behind and that developers greatly needed it, a colleague and I decided to revive the Design System project.
To accomplish this, we recognized the necessity of involving more than just a couple of individuals. We needed defined processes and direct communication with the designers. Thus, we decided to implement the following:
Engagement: Developers interested in contributing to the Design System were required to express their interest to be added to the mailing list.
Meeting: Every first Tuesday of the month, we held a meeting to discuss developments on both the development and design fronts, as well as to share technological and design insights.
Approval Process: After developing a new component, it had to be approved by two developers and two designers.
Ensuring Quality: All created components underwent a review process through Storybook and Chromatic to facilitate design assessment.
Ticketing: We utilized Jira, where one ticket equated to one component, fostering direct communication between developers and designers.
Centralize Information and Engagement: On a monthly basis (during the monthly meeting), we appointed a development and a design reference person to centralize information, communication, and engagement.
To reinvigorate Free's Design System without the need for a dedicated team, we implemented processes and engaged everyone through various means (references, private mailing lists, etc.). In a large organization, this approach conferred a sense of privilege upon those contributing to the project.
Thanks to these initiatives, we effectively revitalized the Design System's development, greatly facilitating numerous projects.
Today, approximately 80% of front-end projects utilize the Design System, as compared to the previous figure of approximately 20%.
